How's Your Headshot?

Looking your best online is always a good idea, but it's incredibly more important when you're also seeking a job. With unemployment on the rise, more and more people are finding themselves on the job market. The smart ones are doing everything in their power to give themselves an edge - a better resume, a better Linkedin profile, attending the best job fairs.  These days, image is everything and you can bet that decision makers are going online and viewing your profiles.  What better way to show potential employers or clients your professionalism and attention to detail than a good professional headshot? Indeed, it is standard advice to job seekers from big guns like Forbes as well as others, "Get a professional business portrait."

A good professional portrait will empower you. Not only will you look great, but there is a palpable difference in that iphone selfie and a professionally lit and retouched portrait.

"People who are in executive positions have been strategically doing this for years, it is not sexy, but it is functional. If you could advance your career and give yourself a competitive edge, just by doing something this simple why wouldn’t you, it pays off." - Emily Bourdages, Professional Photographer

Take a look at your current profile photo and ask yourself, "What does this photography say about me?" Then start taking steps to plan your own professional headshot session.  Once you've scheduled your photo session, begin planning other important details to ensure you end up with a great portrait. You may want to purchase a new outfit or have your hair trimmed. Makeup should be professional and understated but certain extras like false eyelashes never hurt. The main thing you want to convey in your headshot is confidence - and looking your best goes a long way toward giving you confidence.

Here are a few tips:

  • Dress for success in your headshot by wearing business attire you would wear to a job or interview.
  • Have headshots taken by a professional photographer using proper lighting.
  • Use your new headshot on all professional branding including social media such as LinkedIn, about.me, Twitter, Google+, facebook, business cards and website.
